Capturing a wedding, with all those juicy special moments in between, isn’t easy. It requires exceptional skill and technical understanding. But as a bride, how can you find a wedding photographer who understands what you want?
We’re tackling that topic today with a short breakdown of how to choose a wedding photographer that’s right for you.
Step 1. Decide on the right style
There are several photography styles. These include documentary, portrait, edgy, and fine art. Do some research and check out pictures you like. Then find a photographer who specializes in that style.
Step 2. Interview
Set up interviews with photographers who specialize in the style you want. Speak with them, and make sure your personalities match. Believe it or not, photographers are people too and if you don’t get along or vibe well together, you don’t want to hire them to capture the most intimate day of your life.
Step 3. Consider your venue
If you’re getting married outside and having your reception outdoors, then discuss lighting concerns with your photographer. If they don’t specialize in natural lighting, you could end up on the receiving end of lack-luster photographers.
Step 4. Critique their work
While personality is important, don’t hire a photographer just because they are ‘nice’. Trust us, that can come back to bite you big time. The key ingredient is the quality of their work. Ask to see multiple albums from previous wedding shoots. Then take your time to examine each image. Do you like the way the bride and groom look? How many photos of family and friends are there? Be careful and stay focused on hiring someone who does what you’re looking for.
Bonus tip: Always ask about photo rights and compare price packages. Don’t pay more than you have to for a service that’s only as good as another of the same caliber.
Before you sign any contract give yourself time to shop around for a photographer who gets you and who offers the quality you’re looking for. You’ll be glad you put in all the effort to finding the right one!
